Installed or Portable?

March 10, 2011

This is a conundrum for me: at what point can one say that a portable media device that affects a spatial experience is part of the architectural experience?  Does it need to be an installed piece of the fabric to be considered “architectural”, or is the distinction between architecture, fixtures and furnishings a categorical artifice?  This is where I feel incredibly sympathetic to Adolf Loos’ point of view that the architecture should be as silent as possible, providing a container for human habitation to shape the aesthetic experience.
